If you’re a long time reader you’ve probably seen me blog before about the danger of treewells before, however, I came across this site recently and I think every snowboarder should give it a look:
Tree Well Safety & Hazard Information
It’s an incredibly useful site that runs you through basic tree run safety including pictures and videos which are quite helpful, especially if you’re newer to snowboarding and gladed ski runs.
Treewells are dangerous and can/do kill snowboarders. They’re the reason I always try to ride trees with a friend or two.
Here’s a sample from the site (there are a whole lot more videos and diagrams – this is just the intro):
Earlier this season I actually had a friend who nearly died in a tree well, and he’s an ex-competitive snowboarder/snowboard coach, so don’t think it only happens to beginners.
I definitely recommend giving it a look and familiarizing yourself with tree well safety if you intend to hit some tree runs.

ps – don’t let it put you off tree runs. Once you get more advanced, tree runs are some of the most run terrain you can ride!

Yep, it’s good to be educated, but even the educated can be caught off guard. I know that I have fallen into a deep treewell before, and it’s no fun. Luckily I had the knowledge of what do, and a friend with me to help me out of it. I still love tree runs though, and won’t stop riding them anytime soon.
Yeah I’ve ended up in a couple before too, thankfully nothing serious, but definitely have to be careful, especially on those less familiar tree runs.
Tree runs are hands down some of my favourite freeride terrain. Powder always stays so good inside the trees!
