Today’s reader question:
I’ve been snowboarding and filming myself recently, but all the features and tricks appear way smaller on the video. Any advice to make it look more impressive?
As you have found out already, everything looks less impressive on film. Jumps looks smaller and rails look less impressive. There’s a simple way to fix this.
How to make features look way bigger and more impressive
Film from a low view when filming jumps and film from a high view when filming rails.
For jump filming:
Get low. Whoever is filming needs to get really close to the ground. This way it makes the size of the air and the jump look bigger and far more impressive.
The only downside to this is you may have to be creative to get both the takeoff and landing since you’re so close to the ground. You’ll see this shot used in a lot of snowboard films to capture the takeoff of a jump.
For rail filming:
Get high (no pun intended
). You want the filmer to be right next to the rail/box and to hold the camera above their head, looking down at the rail/box.
This gives you a better view of the trick and also makes the rails/box look bigger when compared to filming from the side.
Hope this helps with your filming!
