Whistler Housemates 2009/10
After going through 10-15 housemates every season for the last 4 years, I can definitely say that there are some habits that will annoy the rest of your housemates.
In particular, ski resorts tend to put lots of different types of people under the same roof.
Please don’t be any of the below people:
1) The ‘Oops, I partied too hard’
There’s nothing wrong with going out and having a good time, it’s all part of being at a ski resort, but don’t ruin the fun for the rest of your housemates.
– Don’t break furniture and try to get out of paying it. If you broke the kitchen table while doing drunk bodyslams, it’s coming out of your deposit. Don’t be cheap about it.
– No throwing up and just leaving the mess. Clean it up the next day and do a good job about it, it’s your mess.
– Don’t mess up the hot tub. If you’re lucky enough to have a hot tub, don’t throw up in it.
– Let housemates sleep in peace. If your housemates are trying to hit the slopes early tomorrow, let them sleep. Keep the late night drunken antics outside their room.
2) The ‘I cook, but don’t clean’
If you used it, clean it. Don’t cook and leave your used plates and dishes all over the place. It’s rare for everyone in a large house to have the same level of cleanliness, so clean up after yourself.
Also, no, you’re not allowed to leave your dirty dishes in a ‘used’ pile that you clean once every 2 weeks. You’re not living at home with your parents, your housemates don’t want to wait for you to clean your dishes.
3) The ‘food stealer’
Do not steal other peoples food or shopping. Ask your housemates before ‘borrowing’ their food, most people are pretty happy to share as long as you ask first.
If you came back late one night and ate some of their pizza, you better be ready to buy them a new pizza. The same goes for drinking your housemate’s beer.
4) The ‘internet hog’
Do not spend all day downloading junk onto your computer. You’re slowing down the internet for everyone. In a big house, there are lots of other people who need to use the internet and they don’t want to wait 5 minutes for google.com to open.
If you want to download things, keep it to a couple hours during the day or do it at night when everyone’s sleeping.
5) The ‘waxer’
Don’t wax your snowboard/skis and leave the wax shavings all over the place. Unless you have an agreement with your housemates, clean the wax shavings off the floor before they get stepped on and become a pain to get rid of.
Also, don’t wax indoors unless you have a special waxing room. Hot wax sticks to the floor and it’s a huge pain to clean up when it comes time for a house inspection.
One last thing
It’s understandable if things get a little crazy during the snow season, you’re young (or young at heart) with no responsibilities and you’re at a ski resort. Just remember that you have to live with your housemates for the next few months, so try to get along with them or you may be in for a lot of drama at home.
