Snowboard Helmet Cams & More Snowboard Lessons – Winter Season 2012/13

So the N. Hemisphere winter coming up and I’ll be back in Whistler from next month onwards so here’s the cool snowboard stuff I’ve got coming up:

1) Snowboard Helmet Cam via Contour+2 Camera

Contour+2 helmet cam

I said before that I really want to get more on-hill snowboard footage and also show you guys my daily snowboard shenanigans and Whistler life, so I figure the best way to do that is to just wear a helmet cam every day and edit+upload the footage to our YouTube account.

I usually get 100-200 days per season and there should be lots of decent freestyle POV footage in the park since that’s where I spend most of my time. I’m sure we’ll have lots of cameos from Whistler local pros too.

I’ll probably be going with the new Contour+2 cameras that just came out. I know there’s a lot of people who will tell me to get a GoPro, but here’s why I’m leaning towards the Contour+2 over the GoPro HD Hero2:

  1. Built in GPS + live video playback via bluetooth
  2. Video quality seems improved vs. previous Contour cameras
  3. More low profile compared to the bulky GoPro helmet mount

The low profile of the Contour+2 is probably the deciding factor at the end of the day. If I’m going to snowboard every day with a helmet mount, I want it to be as low profile as possible.

I’m not totally decided yet though still not totally ruling out the GoPro.

2) More snowboard lessons and courses

I released the beginner snowboard video lessons recently, but there’s a lot more to be done.

One thing I want to do is record more beginner videos. There were some areas that I think can be improved and expanded on with more details and video tutorial for beginners.

Another thing is I know not everyone reading Snomie is at that early beginner level, so don’t worry, I’m also releasing more advanced snowboard courses before the N. American snowboard season begins.

The next courses will all be freestyle and trick focused and they’ll be something totally new instead of your usual trick tip videos (which I think my friends at Snowboard Addiction have already done very well).

So there you go. That’s what I’m planning. Hope you all have epic seasons planned too!

  1. I would also recommend looking at the Drift HD action camera. It’s a little smaller than the contour full 1080p adjustable lens angle with someting like 170 degree fish eye view comes with a remote and a built in lcd screen so you can see your footage on the mountain as well.

  2. I got the Contour+ for my Japan trip this year. So easy to use, and having the bluetooth connectivity was awesome since that then meant I could check the angle of my shot. Love it to bits, altho I did try using a suction mount and pushing it to the end of the board to look back up at me, so with the angles needed to get the shot. the back was resting on the toe of the board… killed the camera due to vibration with it knocking on the board (could even hear it knocking) for an hour or so before I got it going again. But despite that I loved it.

So tempted to try and sell it tho and then pay the difference to upgrade to the Contour+2. Seems like it has a few slightly tweaked features that will make it worth the money!

Check today’s Facebook post by Contour tho… a guy lost his Contour HD in an avalanche back in 2010. Someone found it last month and returned it. The owner charged it, fired it up and found it was still working and the footage was still there!

    • Awesome, that’s good to know.

Yeah I’m definitely heavily leaning towards the Contour+2, although I went to check it out in Australia and it was over $150 more than Canada for the same product, so definitely waiting until I’m back in Canada before I buy anything.

      • Yeah, Aussie prices are always more than other places. Really makes me sad. Having said that, there is a place over in Perth that do a discount for sales through their online store, so they have it for $488 I think it was, compared to about $100 more everywhere else. That was were I picked up my Contour+ last year.

  3. You should also check the Sony Action Cam – similar to GoPro quality (or even better according to some reviews), but mounted like Contour. And 100 bucks cheaper :)

    • Yeah I did see the sony, but I’m thinking it might be a little bulky to have on the side of my helmet every day.

Not ruling it out though, going to wait for more reviews on it before I make my final choice.

  4. I had the contour on my last trip, I love it and would recommend it. The only problem I had was one day the camera angle changed in the mount so I had footage of the tip of my board instead of my mates, but with the smart phone app you shouldn’t have this problem.
