Our Free Snowboard Gear Guide:

Should Your Snowboard Pants Go Over Or Under Your Binding Straps?

Today’s reader question:

Are your snowboard pants legs meant to go over or under your snowboard bindings straps?

This question cracks me up because I wondered the exact same thing when I first started snowboarding many seasons ago.

It’s one of those things where your head says, “There’s no way this makes any difference… but maybe I’m wrong.”

You know those times when you have a question that you’re pretty sure is a stupid question, but you still aren’t sure? I guarantee that there are other people out there who have wondered the same thing, so don’t be afraid to ask.

To answer your question, either. It doesn’t matter one way or another. Personally, I ride with my pants under my bindings straps, but not so baggy that they are underneath my boots.

Like so:

Binding over pants leg

Over or under, both are perfectly fine and as long as it isn’t restricting your movement. Also make sure you aren’t getting zippers and buttons stuck under your boot (that can cause pressure spots).

I know some people may swear that one way works better than another, but trust me, it makes no difference. I’ve ridden with pants legs under, pants legs over, pants legs under the straps but above the highback, pants legs over the straps but not over the highback… it’s all the same.

The only time I’ve ever noticed any difference is when I got a button or zipper on the pants legs caught in an awkward position and it pushed into my boot causing pressure spots.

Hope that answers your question.

Remember, there are no stupid questions. It’s better to ask a dumb sounding question and learn the answer than it is to just guess your way through everything.

    Hey,
I am an intermediate to advance snowboarder who got knee surgeries so usually stick to groom trails which I like to ride down fast/carving. However i sometime end up in moguls (usually following some skiing friends) and i s&#k big time at this. Riding a nitro Pantera 2013 163 (i am 6ft tall and weight 185lbs) probably doesn’t help (awesome board for freeriding though).
So any advice on how to handle moguls (including technic, set up, gear, etc.)?
    Cheers

    • lots and lots of practice… j/k if you can make good skidded turns and can use a medium to large range of motion in your legs you line will be a good place to look at. most snowboarders will not make zipper line runs through the moguls. look a few turns ahead and start slow till you are comfortable riding through them. go around the bumps in the troughs not over them if possible because as you go faster you will start to jump over them which is fun as you get the hang of it but can lead to rough landings. you can ride bumps on any gear though softer gear will not get bucked as often if you make a bad turn or get out of alignment. make sure your stance allows you to access your full range of motion in your legs with out having to lean forward breaking at the waist play with your stance and explore how to set a stance that will allow you to bend your knees as low as you possibly can without pain in your knees. hope this helps.
