Waterproof Your iPhone / Android Phone For Snowboarding Using Liquipel?

Liquipel - waterproof your iphone

If you haven’t heard of Liquipel, it’s a new company that offers to ‘waterproof your device’. I can’t help but think that would be pretty neat for snowboarding with my iPhone (if I didn’t want to use a waterproof case).

Their claims:

  • Your phone will repel water – it literally beads off your phone
  • You can’t feel any difference on your phone
  • The coating will last longer than your phone

So, the real question…

Does it actually waterproof your phone?

I did some research and it seems like it ‘kinda’ works. I say kinda, because it works in that it repels water and your electronics stay dry, but your screen can still get screwed up by water pressure if you were to submerge your entire phone into a toilet/pool and the water gets stuck behind the lcd screen.

It’s more water resistant than waterproof.

Here’s a video of rather big tech youtuber testing it out and you can see the results for yourself:

Would I use it or recommend it for snowboarding?

Well, realistically, you’d have your phone in your jacket pocket or in your pants pocket and Liquipel would probably work to keep it dry and prevent random moisture from wrecking your phone… but would I use it over a a sleak, waterproof+shockproof case like the Lifeproof Case?

Honestly, not really. I’m more worried about shock damage than water damage when I snowboard and those Lifeproof cases will cost nearly the same as getting your phone coated by Liquipel ($59), plus you know those cases are actually waterproof.

My recommendation – If you want waterproof and shockproof protection for snowboarding with your phone/iPhone, use a Lifeproof case instead:
