Who Is The Average Snowboarder?

By Jedidiah Tan | Follow Him on Twitter

Why is it so much training material, like trick tips, target advanced snowboarders? I think many people forget that the average snowboarder isn’t some ‘core’ guy or someone that does full winter seasons at ski resorts or even someone that’s really knowledgeable about snowboarding.

The Average Snowboarder

These days, the average snowboarder is just your average guy who might make a couple trips up to the snow each year. They aren’t the ‘core’ guys who know a lot about snowboarding’s roots and they might not even know the first thing about their snowboard gear. They’re just out there having fun on a random snow holiday.

The problem

I feel like that’s the problem for many snow businesses who try to produce training tips and learning solutions for snowboarders. So many are trying to teach advanced tutorials or trying to appeal to veteran snowboarders, it’s almost like they forget that the average snowboarder has no idea what they’re talking about and will never get to that stage.

The average snowboarder is lucky to make it to the snow more than a few times a year. They don’t care about being the next Shaun White, they’re just there to have fun on the slopes on their ski holiday. They need the basics, not trick tips on how to land corked 720s.

You have to teach to people who aren’t deep in the snow culture and aren’t experienced in the sport. If there’s one thing I’ve learnt from all the readers questions and the survey we took recently, you’re always better off teaching anything from a beginner’s point of view.

You can still teach advanced techniques and learning tools afterwards, but the majority of people are after the basics. They aren’t aiming to master double corks. They just want to see some progress, land their frontside 180s every time and not get injured.

That’s just my opinion from answering questions and reading user feedback anyway.

What’s your opinion?
