I’m always surprised at how many skiers/snowboarders don’t own base layers. It’s something that many tend to say “It’s not worth the money.”
I own 3 sets of base layers and they were totally worth the money. Here’s why I love base layers and why you should consider buying a pair.

What’s a base layer?
Base layers or first layers as some call them, are basically long sleeved t-shirts and pants made out of special materials that help you stay warm and dry.
What exactly does a base layer do?
Base layers are made up of highly breathable polyester/spandex or wool. This material works to dry out any sweat and moisture on your body. Basically, this means you sweat less and stay dry throughout the day.
Another big advantage is that wearing a base layer will keep you a lot warmer. Think of a base layer as the modern version of thermal underwear. If you get cold on the mountain, I highly recommend trying out base layers. The difference is definitely noticeable.
Can’t I just wear a t-shirt?
A normal t-shirt is made up of cotton. This is a problem because cotton absorbs your sweat and doesn’t let it go. This means you’ll end up with a wet, sweaty t-shirt at the end of the day.
Don’t forget that being sweaty means that you get wet, which means you then get cold. Obviously, no one likes being cold on the mountain.
If you’re on a budget and don’t ski/snowboard that much, it’s okay. You don’t have to have them. Many people don’t use them. But if you can afford them, they are very nice to have and will keep you a lot warmer and dryer throughout the day.
What are some good base layers and how much do they cost?
You’re spoiled for choice as far as base layers go. A lot of the bigger ski/snowboard/sports companies make base layers and all of them will do the job. These include big names like Burton, Helly Hansen and Under Armour.
You can usually pick up base layers for anywhere from $25-50 per item and you’ll usually need to buy the shirt and pants seperately.
If you want to go for the super premium base layers, you’ll want to look at Icebreaker base layers. They make their layers from pure merino wool, which makes them super soft and comfy. Be warned that you pay a lot more for Icebreaker base layers and you need special washing soap for the wool as well.
Personally, I just buy my base layers based on what’s on sale. You can pick up base layers for about $20-25 each at sales and they will last you for many many seasons.
