There’s a lot of downtime when it comes to dealing with injuries. I’ve lost count of the amount of time I’ve spent stuck at home with injuries. I think my downtime from all my knee surgeries alone is over a year. I like to think that gives me some sort of credibility when it comes to not going stir crazy đ
Here are some of my tips for keeping yourself from getting cabin fever.
1) Video Games
You’re already confined to your home, so why not take the time to have a well deserved break? Video games have come a long way in the last 10 years. Whether you like shooting games, puzzle games, role playing games or sports games, there’s something for everyone.
It’s not just for ‘geeks’
Over 23.5 million people bought the last Call of Duty shooting game. Over 11.1 million people are subscribed to World of Warcraft. In particular, how many people do you know that play Rock Band / Guitar Hero at parties? Gone are the days where video games were just for little kids.
You’ll be surprised at how many of your favourite snow athletes are huge gamers.
2) TV Show Marathons
As yes, what would I do without tv dvd box sets. Maybe you’re not much of a gamer, but who doesn’t enjoy sitting down and watching a marathon session of their favourite TV show?
With the amount of digital download websites like iTunes and dvd rental services like netflix.com, it doesn’t cost you much to rent entire seasons of your chosen tv show.
Enjoy your time off. Kick back and relax a little! How often do you have a good excuse to sit around and watch tv?
3) Learn a new skill
You know how I built most of snomie.com and snowtravelhelp.com? During injury downtime. Much of what you see now was planned and developed while I was waiting to have my 3rd knee surgery. Everything you see on Snomie.com was put together while I was sitting in a bed in my NZ accommodation after having torn my knee cartilage for the 3rd time.
If I can do it, there’s no reason you can’t do it too. Injuries give you an opportunity to work on something you’ve always wanted to do. Don’t look at it as wasted time, but rather look at it as an opportunity.
Whether it’s starting your own snow website like me or learning how to bake the greatest cupcakes ever, injury downtime is a great opportunity to expand your skillset.
