Location plays a huge role in the snow conditions of a ski resort, so how does it help you to plan your snow trip?
Location: How far from the ocean is it?
The closer a resort is to the ocean, the higher it’s snowfall. This is because of the increased moisture and rain that goes with being closer to the ocean.
This is why places like Mammoth, Whistler and Japan get so much snow.
What does this mean for you?
If you want insane amounts powder, look at resorts located close to the ocean. As well as this, keep in mind that if the snowfall at a resort is high, you can visit earlier in the season and expect a good snow base already. On the flip side, expect lots of rocks if you visit a low annual snowfall resort in the early season.
However, be warned, warm temperatures at a resort closer to the coast will also mean you may get more rain.
Altitude: How high is it?
The higher a resort, the dryer the snow. Resorts like Breckenridge, which sit high up in the mountains, tend to get really dry, light snow all year round. There’s less humidity and moisture which leads to awesome dry snow!
What does this mean for you?
If you want the best quality snow, look at resorts with high altitudes. However, keep in mind that it’s hard to find high altitude resorts with high snowfalls equal to Whistler or Mammoth.
One more thing to note is that you may need a couple days to adjust to the higher altitude before being able to ski/snowboard.
Summary
– If visiting in the early season, aim for a high snowfall resort, unless you enjoy lots of rocks.
– If you want very predictable powder, look at high snowfall resorts closer to the coast
– If you want very dry snow all the time, stick to resorts with higher altitudes
– If you want the greatest snow conditions ever, go to Japan (had to add this ;))
Hope all of you have an epic season ahead of you!
