Snow resorts are strange places. There’s not many other places where you’ll find fully qualified lawyers and doctors who are bagging your groceries or serving you food.
The question is why?
Let’s break it down
These people have quit their high paying jobs to work at minimum wage for a reason, so let’s have a closer look.
What do you gain by working as a lawyer?
- Mid to high end income
That’s it. You might say “What about if they love their job?” That’s a good point, but how many people are in jobs they really love? Maybe 10%? The average person is in a job they don’t love, but don’t hate. They do it because it pays the bills.
Now what are the minuses?
- Stress
- Long hours
- Lack of free time
Alright, now lets look at the pluses and minuses for the average ski bum.
Plus
- Low stress
- Amazing scenary
- Lots of time to ski
Minus
- Low income
- Entry level jobs
So looking at it, many people living at ski resorts trade a busy, stressful work environment for less pay and a far less stressful life. Really, when you look at it, is it that surprising that so many people come for a holiday and end up moving to a ski resort?
I don’t think it is. The more you look at it, the more you realize that it’s not surprising that there are many people willing to give up their high paying, stressful jobs in exchange for a simpler life that makes them happier.
Finally, I wasn’t sure what photo to use to represent happiness… so here’s a photo of me in a hot tub:
