Ever had friends think you’re weird because you’re obsessed with snowboarding/skiing? Have they ever said, “Don’t you get sick of it eventually?”
Join the club.
I think all of us that are snow crazy have experienced that at some point, especially from those who have never experienced snowboarding beyond the school trips where no one actually did much snowboarding.
A matter of perspective
Weird is a funny thing. Weird is only weird until everyone else is doing it, then it becomes normal. Let me give you some examples.
Remember when video games were only for nerds and geeks? Most of the ‘cool’ kids thought it was weird to enjoy shooting spaceships or playing mario. How about now? Last I checked, my facebook feed is regularly filled with status updates relating to Call of Duty, Halo or Battlefield 3.
Heard of a little game called Angry Birds? I’m willing to bet that many of the same people who laughed at kids shooting spaceships in high school are now using a slingshot to hit pigs with birds.
Let’s take it a step further. How about playing video games as your job? That sounds pretty dam weird. However, let’s move our location to South Korea. Now instead of weird, you get rewarded with 6 figure paycheques and thousands of fan girls for being good at video games.
Now let’s do this with snowboarding. If I tell most of my non snowboarder friends that I want to snowboard over 250 days every year, they’ll usually say something like, “Won’t you get sick of it?” I’m weird to them.
Now if I go tell my snowboard friends the same thing, they’ll probably respond with an enthusiastic, “Heck yeah! Take me with you!”
What I’m getting at is no matter what you do, to someone, you’ll be weird and chances are, even if it’s not weird, at some point, it was considered weird.
Don’t worry about what’s weird and what’s not weird and just enjoy being the weird person that you are, especially if it means snowboarding as much as you can!
