Should You Save Money For A Season Or Work And Play?

Work and play?

Work and play?

More reader questions! Joel asked:

Should I save enough money to live for a whole season or save some and work while I’m there? If I only have to save some, I can go earlier, but I’m worried I won’t get much time to snowboard.

Obviously, we’d all like to never have to work and snowboard all day, but we can’t all be that lucky 😉 Here’s my thoughts:

If it’s your first season, I highly recommend saving enough to not have to work full time while you’re there. Your first full season is kind of special and you really want the savour it as much as possible. You want to be able to do snowboard whenever you want and enjoy all the events and fun that goes on at the resort.

Part-time work will still leave you plenty of time to ski/snowboard, especially if you pick the right work. Evening shifts and night shifts will give you plenty of time for snowboarding. You should also check out our previous blog on ‘What Resort Jobs Offer The Most Free Time For Skiing/Snowboarding‘.

If you’re short on cash, you can also consider doing half a season or doing a season in NZ/Aus where their seasons are a lot shorter (about 3 months of good snow). Nothing says you have to do a complete 6 month season, in fact, many people tend to do shorter 3 month stints over the Christmas break due to work or study obligations.

Hope that helps! You may also find our previous blog on ‘How to do a season at Whistler‘ helpful. You can apply that advice to many other big resorts, not just Whistler.

Good luck and I hope you have a great season!
